Description
The Berlin-Brandenburg region has a population of nearly 6 million and is located in eastern Germany.  The region is home to some of Europe’s leading research universities, over 250 non-university research institutions, and a multitude of small and medium-sized technology firms.

In the heart of this region lies the City for Science, Technology, and Media, Berlin-Adlershof. Over 163 acres, with 375 technology oriented companies, approx. 3,580 in staff, and a yearly turnover of €554 Mio., it is one of Europe’s largest integrated science and technology parks.

Major Industries
Berlin-Brandenburg specialises in photonics and optical technologies; materials and microsystems technology; information and media technology; and environmental, bio-, and energy technology.  It is also home to OpTecBB, one of the nine competence networks for optical technologies in Germany.

Universities
With the world-renown Humboldt University of Berlin, Free University Berlin, Technical University of Berlin, and the University of Potsdam as well as 18 universities of applied science, Berlin-Brandenburg hosts some 168,000 students yearly.

Berlin-Brandenburg’s many research facilities include the Science, Technology, and Media Park Berlin-Adlershof, which is operated by WISTA-MANAGEMENT GMBH, the Institute for Applied  Chemistry Berlin-Adlershof (ACA) the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) the German Aerospace Center (DLR) the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut for High Frequency Engineering (FBH) the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Architecture and Software Technology (FIRST), the Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, Solar Energy Research (HMI) the Max-Born-Institut for non-linear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI), and many more.

Major companies
Berlin-Brandenburg has a strong research basis in areas of optical technologies, in both the manufacturing and services sectors.  Major companies include ADVA Optical Networking, Berlin Glas KGaA, KRONE GmbH, OSRAM GmbHSamsung, Schering AG, Siemens AG, are located here.

Photonics and Optical Technologies in Berlin Adlershof
One main focus of the Berlin Adlershof Science and Technology Park is the field of Photonics and Optical Technologies. Actually there are about 50 companies active here, such as AEMtec GmbH and First Sensor Technology GmbH. About 660 employees generate an annual turnover rate of approximately 80 million € in that technology field. Their specific work areas are: Laser technology, including laser medicine technology Optoelectronics Technical optics Optics, electron ray, and X-ray analytics On about 17,000 m2 there are modern physician’s rooms as well as offices available in the buildings of the Center for Photonics and Optical Technologies. Moreover, the Center for Photonics and Optical Technologies also provides technical equipment. The competence network OptecBB e.V. is also headquartered in the Science and Technology Park.
